THE MATRIX with Laurence Fishburne

IRULE #13 BULLET TIME AND MOVEMENT

“The Matrix” uses a filming technique called “bullet time” which changes the depth perception of an action. To the naked eye it looks like extreme slow motion giving the viewer a close up view of objects like a bullet moving through space.

Laurence Fishburne played Morpheus and had a certain look and style for his character which was commanding, strong and forceful. That movement requires a lean, strong, flexible body. Movement and exercise is best learned with slow, deliberate, thoughtful movements. As a training technique we incorporated tempo training into his program slowing up movement. Use of a Total Gym on set before shooting would effectively warm up his body naturally using gravity resistance training.

Another big part of his training program was diet and nutrition incorporating slow, chewing motions. Slowing everything up is a good advice for learning movement, eating and drinking. Martial arts is a big part of this film and is the best exercise format to teach this rule. Slow movement for training can later be executed with fast movement to achieve the desired result, just as slowly chewing food and drinking water will more effectively deliver nutrients to your body cells.
